Our founder and CEO, Ali El Kaafarani was recently featured in SDx Central, a leading technology journal that focuses on next generation IT, discussing the shift currently taking place in the story of post-quantum cryptography.
The quantum shift, Ali explains, is down to recent moves by tech giants and leading industry players towards PQC migration. For example, Apple’s iMessage with PQ3, Google Chrome’s 124 update, as well as the likes of Meta and Zoom announcing significant PQC updates in recent months. These implementations show the seriousness with which industry leaders now consider the transition to PQC.
Additionally, the NIST PQC standard release is expected imminently. It will be a key milestone for many organizations that are currently held back by the lack of formal standards.
“The release of the NIST standards will switch the whole scenery from readiness and preparation for post-quantum cryptography, to compliance,” says Ali.
In fact, many of the partners we’ve worked with at PQShield are ready to start selling PQC-enabled products, but are unable to do so, until those products are compliant with industry standards.
Another factor in quantum shift, is the need for synchronization of the supply chain. Manufacturers need to know that their suppliers are providing compatible post-quantum components, and that the supply chain is working in the same ‘post-quantum cryptography language’. As adoption of PQC increases, it will become more important not to be isolated from the new technology.
With the continuing acceleration of PQC in 2024, the second half of the year is likely to be exciting. It’s expected that all major web browsers will support PQC by the end of the year, and many of the leaders in industry will roll out post-quantum solutions in the wake of the NIST standards.
“You will see that the 20% of the companies that cover 80% of use cases and protocols and solutions and control the market will be the first to move,” says Ali.”And then you will see that the rest of the cards will start following suit.”
The quantum shift is on.
