Banks must prepare for the quantum threat, The Banker, Nov 26

The focus on critical national infrastructure (CNI) is intensifying. With recent cyber attacks and escalating geopolitical tensions, the question of defending infrastructure from evolving cyber and cryptographic threats has become a key matter for governments, operators and CNI providers around the world.

Banking infrastructure is CNI. The stakes are high, and the attack surface is wide, which is why it’s become clear that every layer of financial infrastructure must become quantum-safe.

Speaking with The Banker, PQShield’s Chief Strategy Officer, Ben Packman highlights that quantum-readiness is a matter of “when, not if” and that the solution is a matter of risk management. With thousands of change programs already underway in the financial services sector, the conversation has shifted from theory to active, present-day risk control, fueled by the sharpening timelines for the deployment of post-quantum cryptography.

What’s more, the rapid proliferation of AI has shown just how fast technology can transform workflows, and how security must race to encompass the latest technological advancements. As Ben notes, that velocity provides a valuable lesson for cryptography modernization:

“The AI hype noise is actually helping people to realise that things aren’t standing still and quantum is another piece of that jigsaw puzzle.” – Ben Packman

Financial institutions cannot afford to wait. From prioritizing ‘crown-jewel’ assets to assessing critical third-party suppliers, the next steps must be proactive. As the article points out: “The timing of quantum computers’ impact remains unknown but regulators are clear they believe preparation is urgently needed.”
