US launches Quantum Readiness Task Force

Following President Trump’s Executive Order 14412 – Strengthening the Nation’s Cybersecurity, the US Department of the Treasury has announced the creation of the Quantum Readiness Task Force for the financial sector.

The Task Force is a public-private initiative aiming to help the sector transition to quantum-safe technology, building on the roadmap established by the G7 Cyber Expert Group. There are three dedicated workstreams:

  • Sector Alignment & PQC Transition – PQC transition is officially framed as a present-day risk control measure. An expected outcome is heightened urgency for banking, insurance, and payment infrastructure.
  • Third-Party & Vendor Readiness – Financial institutions will need to produce inventories and enforce PQC compliance across their network of vendors and service providers. Clear PQC roadmaps are likely to drive adoption through the commercial tech supply chain.
  • Digital Assets and Emerging Technology Risk – Blockchain, tokenized assets, and decentralized financial infrastructure must align with PQC standards alongside traditional banking networks. Organizations will need to move away from hard-coded cryptographic implementations and push for crypto-agility.

The intention is that the Quantum Readiness Task Force will act as a co-ordinator rather than an enforcer, helping to guide the private financial sector towards PQC adoption. It’s a critical effort, based on the need for alignment between government regulators, financial market infrastructures and private institutions. Industry milestones and regulator frameworks in the financial sector are certain to follow.

“The Financial Sector Quantum Readiness Task Force will help ensure that the transition to quantum-safe technology is coordinated, risk-based, and operationally resilient. By bringing together government and industry to lead the transition to quantum-safe finance, the U.S. will strengthen trust in its financial system and reinforce its economic and national security.” – Luke Pettit, Treasury Assistant Secretary for Financial Institutions

The Task Force operates directly under the US Department of the Treasury, and ultimately reports to the Treasury Secretary, informing the broader White House cybersecurity positioning. With the stakes high and the timeline ever shortening, it’s another push towards bringing the global financial sector into alignment on PQC-compliant, quantum-readiness, ahead of the next decade of advancing threats.
