Advances in quantum computing threaten current public-key cryptography mechanisms, endanger digital infrastructure and put data security at risk.
In a recent publication, the G7 Cybersecurity Working Group has issued a formal call to action, urging immediate global preparation for the post-quantum era. The Group, operating under France’s 2026 G7 Presidency and therefore chaired by ANSSI, advocates for a collective transition, designed to resist both classical and quantum attacks.
The report, signed off by national cybersecurity agencies across all G7 member states, the European Commission, and ENISA – outlines five strategic priorities:
- Raise Awareness – Reframe the threat as an economic risk rather than a purely technical problem by promoting awareness campaigns and integration of PQC into wider cybersecurity strategies.
- Develop National Strategy – Establish policies to secure an adequate PQC supply chain, embedding the transition plan into national frameworks.
- Research & Development – Fund initiatives aimed at creating practical, innovative PQC solutions.
- Develop Public-Private Partnerships – Encourage collaboration across government, academia, and industry to facilitate cross-sector resource sharing and domestic expertise.
- Integrate PQC into Cybersecurity Requirements – Consider PQC adoption as an evolution of cryptographic best practices and incentivize integration in products, services, and internal operations.
For PQShield, the report is an indication of how quickly the world is moving towards mainstream adoption of PQC.
Organizations are recommended to adopt a phased, risk-based strategy, prioritizing critical data and assets, then map dependencies to establish a clear timeline. With a co-ordinated approach from co-operating cybersecurity agencies, the supply chain stands a better chance of transitioning more quickly. What’s more, the plan to use standard renewal cycles to upgrade to quantum-safe products should minimize migration overhead and simplify the strategy.
Once again, co-ordination is key, and ANSSI and the G7 show that the time to work together is now – keeping us all ahead of the quantum threat.
